Wikis
wiki wiki busWikis
Wikis are basically websites that are easily editable by the site's members. They are excellent for collaborative projects or any situation where you want the information to flow from many to many (unlike a blog or typical website which is design to flow from one to many). You can set up your wiki for a select group of people or make it accessible to everyone. Some teachers have even invited parents or local experts to collaborate with them on their wikis.

If you plan on using a wiki with your students then plan on training them with the basics of logging in, finding a page and editing a page. You could do this together or set up a screencast for them to view on the front page of your wiki. This might be a good time to talk about digital citizenship and the responsibilites that come from online publishing. It would also be advisable to set up an RSS or other alert system to changes made on the wiki to keep on top of any additions or deletions to your wiki. Most providers offer a tool to publish previous drafts which is useful in case a user deletes important information.

Free Wiki Providers (of course you can always pay for upgrades and options though)

Wetpaint
Great for the non-techie person. They offer an educational wiki package which is free plus they have a good support system and plenty of examples of other class wikis for you to draw ideas from.

Wikispaces
A very popular provider for educational wikis. Very simple formats that resembles wikipedia which can seem boring for some. Many teachers like the simplicity since the students spend less time on the format and more time on the content

Zoho
Another good wiki provider that makes it easy to integrate multi-media contents into the webpage. They provide users with two free wikis and offer plenty of ideas and example wikis.

Google Sites

The Google sites as a wiki excells with its pleasant interface and ability to integrate other Google apps and video into the pages. Like the other apps from Google they can be private, shared or made public.

Examples of Classroom Wikis

Flat Classroom Project - a great example of a wiki that brought two classes from opposite sides of the world together for one project (made with wikispaces).
Indianhead International School - a school wiki for teachers, students and parents (made with wetpaint)
Carol Morgan High School - a school wiki with pages for each department and teacher (made with Zoho)
