Video Game Creation
Many students (and teachers) love to play video games but they often wish that they could make a game of their own. Until recently, video game programming has been left up to the high level developers with advanced graphic design software but now even those of us with very little computer skills can assemble our own games.
Websites have emerged that allow users to piece together games using a tool box of choices which takes the high level programming out of the equation. Some even allow those with plenty of imagination and time to create your own from scratch. Here are some of the sites students and I have found which allow users to create and publish their own video games.
When I have worked with students to create their own games, we had good conversations about what makes a video game entertaining. Is it the story line, the graphics, competition, the challenge or something else? Many students have an opionion about games but most have never analyzed games from this perspective. Students who didn't normally show an interest in creative writing were eager to write out the story lines to their games. Some even wanted to incorporate historical events and artifacts.

Sploder
This site offers a cookie cutter format to create your video games within the basic parameters which they have set for their worlds. You can choose two basic types of game formats and then create the game space for your main character. You then can add a multitude of weapons, power ups, villians and several other components to make your game challenging and entertaining. Its very easy to use and you can also save your games, publish them and then let the world test them for you. You may also get ideas from other people's games which are published on the website.
