Broadcast with a Podcast
Searching for a better way to engage students or communicate with people around the world? Podcasting could be the answer and it is simpler than you might think. It is a tool being used by both 1st graders and fortune 500 companies alike. A podcast is a program that is usually an audio (could also be video) recording that is made available to others as a downloadable file. Its basically an on-demand radio show that people subscribe to and catch with their computer or portable device (ipod or other mp3 player).
Making your own podcast is fairly simple and their are a number of free providers to choose from. It hasn't been easier to broadcast your own radio show that the world could listen to. Students are often motiviated by performance and the idea that they are broadcasting raises the significance of their work. Creating a class or schoolwide podcast would be fairly simple for a couple of students and it could be heard at the convience of everyone else in the school.
If you don't want to try recording your own just yet, you can still benefit from podcasts as a listener. Preparing a list of podcasts for students to use on a givin topic would be a great way for them to learn with devices they probably have in their pocket anyway. Students or even teachers could benefit from listening to specialists from their field of study or interest.
Would you rather watch a video about podcasting in the classroom?
Here is a nice explanation from Colette Cassinelli. |

Free Podcast Software
 |
Audacity
They have become one of the most popular open source audio recorders available. They work well with a variety of formats. They provide a good collection of editing tools like mixing, noise reduction, cross fading, echo effect and much more. Audacity does not include publishing software, you must go through another provider to publish your podcast such as PodBlaze.

 |
Odeo Studio
A service that will help you record and share your podcasts. They are not downloadable software and you have t be online to use their recorder. You can also upload an mp3 file or use their phone service for your recording. They have very simple editing tools and host your recording on their website. You can share your recording by providing a link to others or place it on your website. If anyone listens to a recording but does not use their player, they will have to listen to a Odeo intro to the podcast (that's the price of free). |
